The Right Way to Leave Your IRA, 401(k), or Other Retirement Account

Coordinate the beneficiary designation, the beneficiary's circumstances, distribution rules, and any proposed Trust. An IRA Inheritance Trust can serve particular goals, but naming a Trust is not the right answer for every account or family.

You Saved for Retirement. What Are You Leaving Behind?

The account that supports your retirement may become one of the largest assets your loved ones inherit. Its beneficiary form is a planning decision. The arrangement that works for a spouse may differ from one suited to an adult child, a person with a disability, or a beneficiary who needs help managing money.

Start With the Beneficiary Form

Confirm who is named and who takes if that beneficiary cannot. Coordinate the form with your Estate Plan rather than assume the Will controls the account. Ask the plan administrator what options are available; employer plans can have provisions that differ from an IRA.

Understand That Timing Matters

Inherited retirement accounts have distribution rules. The applicable treatment depends on the type of account, date of death, beneficiary classification, and other facts. Many designated beneficiaries are subject to a ten-year rule. That does not mean every beneficiary can safely ignore annual distribution requirements until year ten.

Evaluate a Trust for a Specific Purpose

A properly designed Trust may be considered for management or inheritance-protection goals. Its terms, beneficiary treatment, documentation, and distribution mechanics can affect the tax result. Compare the control you seek with the costs and restrictions the arrangement creates. Avoid changing a beneficiary form without coordinating the full plan.
